Panda Cosplay and Conservation
These costumes were worn by staff at a nature reserve in China to release two year old panda cub Tao Tao. They wear these disguises to prevent the cub becoming habituated to humans, and to convince him to socialize with other pandas. To complete the illusion, the panda outfits were smeared with panda urine and feces.
His mother was lured away using bamboo, and similarly moved. 18 months ago the pair were transferred to a large mountainous area to get used to living in their natural habitat, and more recently they pair were taken to a wilder, more remote region of the Wolong Nature Reserve where they can hopefully enjoy greater freedom and safety.
